Creating the perfect web design is not possible as everyone has different ideals and visions about their website design. In addition to this, there are a few mistakes people or rather web designers tend to repeat over and over again.
Not only amateurs, even top designers can make mistakes as they don't realize that the website should be created more by keeping the visitor's patience and vision in mind and not just by following their vision.
Here is a list of the most common web design mistakes committed, and which you should avoid.
It is true that fancy fonts make your website look attractive and sophisticated. However not all fonts are readable on all computers. If you want people to comfortably read your web content, you have to ensure the content is written using readable font.
Though HTML tables have always been used to create page layouts, today CSS is a better web development
. CSS is more reliable, is faster and also has more features that help your website load faster. So avoid using HTML, use more of CSS on your website.
Don't just stuff web content in your website; whatever content you add to your web design should be scannable. Visitors to your website don't have the patience to search for what they are looking for. Use the help of bullet points, headers and sub headers to make your web content more scannable to visitors.
Don't do the web design mistake of forcing visitors to register at your site and leave their email address and other details to get the information they are looking for. This should be made an option and not a necessity.
A flash web design is very attractive; however don't overdo it as it not only increases your website load time but may also annoy visitors. Make it a point to use flash only to offer features that static pages don't support well.
Don't make the visitor look for the links to information they are looking for. You have to use and insert a navigation bar, preferably at the top or left hand side of the page to provide for the easy navigation of the website.
Don't do the mistake of creating links in your web design and leaving it like that. You have to regularly check your links to ensure they are still working and not broken. No matter how attractive your website may look, it will be of no use for you if it has broken links.
Another mistake to avoid is not marking your external links. A website constitutes of internal links connecting your web pages and external links that connect your site to other websites.
External links work better only if you mark them with a symbol or by making it a different color. It is even better if you make external links open in new windows so that visitors need not leave your site on clicking them. |
